You may or may not have been wondering what the hell is going on with Sankeys New York. The club was supposed to open this summer, and it’s now November. Turns out they are realizing how difficult it is to open a club in our fair city. It appears the club is having some trouble getting some permits together and such. One of the things Sankeys New York location has going for it is exactly that, its location. There isn’t a residential building for blocks with the club setting up shop on 50th street at 12th avenue (for those not from New York, 12th Avenue might be more familiar to you as The West Side Highway). So what’s the hold up?
The liquor and cabaret licenses of course. Community Board 4, which is the CB for he Hell’s Kitchen has been giving the club a hard time ensuring that they follow by the rules before they’ll be allowed to do much of anything. The CB is concerned about noise levels at the club, both inside, as well as outside once the club closes and the club patrons are outside. Sankeys has said that the cafe is supposed to serve as a buffer for those leaving the club, so that 500 people don’t spill out onto the streets in the morning hours.
Eden Ballroom LLC has not yet determined the name of its establishment. The
complex will consist of the café and lounge on the first floor and the night club
(cabaret) on the second floor. The applicant has stated they have designed the café
into the facility to control the number of patrons exiting at one time by providing a
post closing venue. Entrance to the lounge and nightclub will be on West 50th Street
with the café entrance located on the corner of West 50th and Westside Highway. A
signed copy of the stipulations agreed to by the applicant is enclosed.
As or right now, the club is named “Eden Ballroom.” Some of you may recognize the name; they run the Taj Lounge… one of your typical bottles joints in the city. This same group tried to buy into the Roxy two years ago, but after fighting with the community board there, they withdrew their offer. Seems like Sankeys has hired their services to help get things off the ground, since they are primarily based overseas. A-Luv is supposed to be running things, and that appears to be the case, as his name is on the liquor license:

The club was supposed to be open by this summer, but that came and went. Sankeys was sending emails around about the club earlier this year, but those have stopped as well. We were emailed the link to their SLA filing months ago, and as seen above, it’s still pending. Doesn’t look that is going to change anytime soon as the Eden Ballroom doesn’t appear to be in the CB’s agenda going through the end of this year. Let us know if you have any info!
