Kraftwerk At MOMA Sells Out As Showclix Servers Cannot Handle The Load

Bad news for those of you who wanted to buy Kraftwerk tickets (and haven’t already hit up Twitter)… Kraftwerk at the MOMA is completely sold out.  Pretty impressive as it only took about an hour for all 8 shows to sell out.  Fans started hammering the site right at noon and Showclix servers could not handle the load as loads of fans complained that their spot in the queue had timed out (though Showclix ensured that the queue was done by IP address, so rejoining would put you in the same place you were in prior to the time outs).  Some people were able to call Showclix and secure tickets that way (we were able to get through to them and they had confirmed that everything except Radio-Activity was sold out around 12:55).  Hopefully they tour again soon so those of us who missed out get another shot.

Great Dubspot Tutorial On Understand Effects

If you live in the New York area and have been wanting to learn how to produce music (or DJ), Dubspot is really the place to go.  While most of us already know the basics of producing, every time we visit the Dubspot blog, we learn more and more as they go in depth (as well as the basics) on techniques to improve your game.  This time around, they help the new folks learn about what can be a daunting topic, audio effects.  It sounds simple, but knowing the ins and outs of effects and when and more importantly, when not to use them, is the difference between a good track, and a stand out track.  They even give you some demonstrations of each (it used to really suck in the days before YouTube when you had to rely on the descriptions in a book to figure out what modulation sounded like.

Deadmau5 Hosts Nokia Lumia Launch With 4D Display In London

We don’t really post about Deadmau5 too much these days because there are 4040304343 other sites that do that.  But since we are tech geeks, we thought this was kind of interesting.  Deadmau5 performed Monday in London for the launch of Nokia’s new Windows Mobile phone providing the music to an interactive display put on by Nokia in the center of the city in 4D.  From the looks of the video, we only see 3D, but then again we aren’t experts in that field.  Regardless, we were expecting a bit more, but we won’t be Debbie Downers (lord knows there are enough of those in this scene) so we’ll leave that part to you.

Dubspot Tutorial – Using Beatgrids In Traktor And Ableton To Mix Disco

If you’ve ever tried to mix Disco before, you know it’s hard as hell.  The reason for this is that disco tracks more often than not used live drummers for the drums and not a computer.  Normal dance music is quantized, so the kick drums always hit at exactly the right moment.  This in turn, makes it easy for the DJ to beatmatch when mixing in and out of tracks.  But when you have non-consistent timing on the kick drums, it makes it very hard (so you should all give props to DJ’s like Nicky Siano, Timmy Regisford, Danny Krivit and the likes).  Dubspot has a tutorial on their blog to help you get those disco mixes sounding flawless.  Check it out by clicking here.

Allen & Heath Releases New Xone:DB2 Promo Video

Allen & Heath has released another video showing off the FX engine in the DB2.  The smaller brother (or sister) of the DB4, the DB2 is set for release in December, but could possibly be delayed as long as March.  Looking forward to this one, but hope it comes sooner rather than later…

New York Times Article From 1999 On Phazon Sound (Twilo)

Someone emailed us a link to this great article from 12 years ago (yes 1999 is really 12 years ago) that the New York Times did with Steve Dash and Phil Smith of Phazon sound (and owners of Twilo).  The club was no doubt the go to place in Manhattan in the mid to late 90′s (going into the closing in 2002) with a great deal of that having to do with the sound system that was installed.  The system was designed by Steve himself, who learned electrical engineering in the military.  The system was maintained by Craig of Systems by Shorty, who now builds some of the biggest sound systems in the world. Allen & Heath Xone:DB2 Reportedly Delayed

Some news out of the Allen & Heath Camp.  It appears A&H’s newest mixer, the DB2 (little brother to the DB4), has been delayed from its early December launch.  Though there are a few sites around the net advertising that the mixer will be out come December 1st, Allen & Heath told us other wise.  In an email to a rep… Read more »

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2: The Good And The Not So Good

We held off on this one for a bit as we wanted to get the details on Native Instruments upcoming Traktor Kontrol S2.  The S4 has been a big success since its release last year, and although we did not review it, we thought it had some positives as well as negatives.  After reading up on the S2, it appears many of the main features of the S4 will be available in the little brother, minus one of the best things the S4 had going for it in the 4 channels and the loop recorder.  The four channel feature allows you to run 2 tracks, samples, and acappellas together seamlessly integrating all of them at once into your mix.  The loop recorder allows you to record samples on the fly and trigger them at any point while beatmatching them, making for a great way to add extra snippets to your mixes. Steve Lawler Starts His Facebook Studio Journal

Pretty cool for those of you looking for tips from the pros.  Steve Lawler (who we all know is one of the great producers and DJ’s of our day) is posting a journal on his Facebook page about the happenings in his studio.  In the journal he talks about some of the applications he is using for his new album, along with any synths, VST’s, etc. that he thinks might help others along the way.  Pretty cool to get tips and insight from the head honcho of Viva Music if we do say ourselves.  If only more DJ’s and producers did this (instead of sitting on Facebook all day updating their status and making their egos ever-larger as if that was possible).  For his first post, he talks about  IK Multimedia T-racks Processing Suite.  You can check out the full post by clicking here.

You can also check out Steve’s Top 10 for September on Resident Advisor by clicking here.  Cheers.
