| Stereo review, Sun/Mon. Roger S . & Alain Vinet
I made my way to Stereo around 5:30 am Monday morning after an action packed weekend with a ttl. of 6hrs sleep. Club was at capacity and we had to wait a bit at the door. After a year waiting what's another 15 minutes ![]() You could smell the smoke and saw where the coatcheck was boarded up, as well as above the entrance. Layout is actually similar in some ways and I really like the changes made. This is what Stereo was supposed to look like in the beginning. After a quick walk around I was almost speechless, all I could muster to everyone I knew was "This place is PIMP!" I really won't go over the design details too much because you really have to see for yourself how elegant and simple it is. I have been to some nice clubs, there is nothing that comes to mind except maybe the old Twilo Miami that could keep pace with the design. It will only get nicer when finished due to the circumstances. As for crowd, this place has the best VIBE in the world str8 out of the box. I guess that's no surprise but the crowd was mixed to perfection.. if people remember the left side right side deal, it sort of followed the same boundaries but it was more natural and the crowd was just having fun no matter where. Seating!!! unbelievable, beautiful.. This place combines every single aspect I want in a place where I have to dance sober for 8hrs +. Comfy and spacious booth style seating over looking the nicest dancefloor I have ever witnessed. There is no equal period. STUNNING. Floors are just beautiful and the raised VIP is truly VIP, I don't think they should let anyone up there, glassed in on either side of the booth the effect is amazing and it truly feels like a booth made in heaven. Then I realized the smell of smoke & went to examine the damage more closely and almost cried.. How could anyone set a fire to this :/.………. mezzanine was the worst hit but the clean up crew and all the volunteers that worked their buts off really pulled it off, THANK YOU! I was unhappy that I missed Alain's opening set as there is no DJ I enjoy more. Roger was playing "21st century Roger" stuff, builds, breakdowns ubiquitous beats.. peak hour.. no earplugs on me.. I had to leave after 30 minutes. Went home got changed into dancing gear, -30 db earplugs in hand.. breakfast, shower and back to the club for take two @7:30.. crowd still going off, not many had left in the two hours passed. Sardine dancing wasn't worth the music Roger was playing, felt like he was going through the motions, every third track being quite good but it was one level shit.. no real journey from 7:30 till the end of his set around 10:30. People said he was having fun but this is why I think overrated and overpaid djs just don't have what it takes to make me sit up and take notice. Something about this echelon of djs that have found commercial success that makes them lose that down to earth vibe needed to really rock this room. Now, as some that know me realize that I'm really all about sound, I will briefly give my first impressions without boring you all with my tech. babble. Please keep in mind this is the second night the system was being played and the owners had much more pressing issues to deal with just to open the doors.. The sound will only get better… And str8 out of the box it destroys a place like Pacha NYC, but this is Stereo and it has a great audiophile past to live up to. This place is LOUD, bass is decent, highs are okay.. needs work and it will get it. The digital era has left me wanting something that is quickly disappearing from the nightlife landscape. People really need to remember one key thing.. Bass reinforcement Berthas with Levan extensions were never meant to be used with this new digital processing equipment, it wasn't invented for another 20yrs +. No setting on these digital speaker management systems can take this into account, and sorry guys but especially not with a Solotech technician. Why does it sound like every other big club but louder.. 1 reason, if you went analogue you would have to have visiting dj's go through a strict info. session on the limitations and have someone baby sitting them all night so these half deaf "superstars" didn't destroy expensive equipment.. seemed like the EAW booth monitors diaphragms were blown straight away.. long time touring dj's have the occupational hazard of losing the ability to hear and this makes me very sad.. Then Roger finishes, Alain comes back on with a Stereo classic, regulars throw their hands in the air.. Sound is instantly better!!! Levels better!! Music better!! Okay now I can see the light after an hour of the Vibe I remember so well. Went up to the booth, WOW.. UREI Mixer, could it be!!!! Thank God, oh and an isolator for every one of the four Pio. decks, ROTARY DJ HEAVEN! Once word travels this place will be sought after by top djs who want to drive this Ferrari.. A quick word to the losers: To those that want to destroy this, you have no class & are a bunch of thugs.. You will get yours in the end. This has only made the place stronger and you have totally misjudged your ignorance. Whoever you "people" are, you are truly without any sense of decency and you will FAIL because this institution is beyond your comprehension. A quick word to the winners: A serious Thank You to Tommy, Mike and the entire Stereo team. I know it really hasn't been easy but your efforts have made a lot of people very happy to have their home away from home on the dance floor back. A quick word for the curious: You have to experience this place for yourself.. it really blew me away. Respectfully yours, Charlie
